For this week’s assignment, I decided to input the crab I saw in Fiji last March into INaturalist. My username is K_Doak and here is a direct Link; Tawny Hermit Crab (Coenobita rugosus) from Nadroga-Navosa, Fiji on March 12, 2022 at 02:20 PM by k_doak · iNaturalist
Using the Compare Function, the closest match identified was a Tawny Hermit Crab aka Coenobita rugosus. See Below;
“C. rugosus has four walking legs, a small pincer, a large pincer, and antennae. When threatened C. rugosus is able to make a ‘chirping’ sound by rubbing its large pincer against its shell as a stridulatory apparatus.”
This was my first time seeing this type of crab and I specifically remeber hearing the ‘chirping’ sound as described above.
My question is when you learn the scientific name of species, do you think of that or the common name first?
